SmartCrop is a new and simple irrigation management control where “the plant is the sensor.” Patented and developed by the Agriculture Research Service of the USDA, SmartCrop combines plant biology and agronomic science to precisely determine crop water demand. Growers are able to “listen to their crop” and avoid over-watering. SmartCrop is the simple and affordable way to maximize profits while saving water.
SmartCrop uses wireless infrared sensors that are conveniently placed in the grower’s field. The sensors measure the surface temperature of the leaf and compare this temperature to the plant’s known optimum temperature. This information is then relayed to a centrally located base station, which can notify the grower via a text message or e-mail, when high crop stress levels are present. Growers are also able to view their crop’s stress data by logging into www.smartfield.com.
